Whale watching
Whale watching in Sri Lanka is a popular and thrilling
activity that allows visitors to witness some of the largest creatures on Earth
in their natural habitat. The best time for whale watching in Sri Lanka varies
depending on the region. In Mirissa, on the south coast, the whale watching
season generally runs from November to April, with December to March being the
peak months. In Trincomalee, on the east coast, the season is from May to
October.
Species to Spot: Sri Lanka's waters are home to several
species of whales, including the majestic blue whale, the largest animal on the
planet. Other species commonly spotted include sperm whales, humpback whales,
Bryde's whales, and occasionally, even orcas (killer whales). Dolphins,
including spinner dolphins, are also frequently seen during whale watching
excursions.
